Exotic Myken
Myken is a charming, traditional fishing community in the municipality of Rødøy in Nordland, far off the coast of northern Norway. It is about 25 km above the Arctic Circle and about 32 km from the nearest mainland, with hundreds and hundreds of smaller islands in between. People live on the biggest of the the 40 or so islands that make up Myken. Around 20 people inhabit Myken on a permanent basis, among others an Icelandic family. Despite the small number of residents, Myken is a dynamic society with lots of energy and activity.
Looking at the map, it is obvious that Myken is not somewhere next door or down the road. The distance from other communities makes the Myken society a strong one. People gather for different events and join forces to make Myken a good place to live and visit. You will notice how well houses are kept and that lots of work is being put down so people can thrive. Through local and government initiatives, resources have been made available for restoring and maintaining some of the oldest buildings, taking care of the Myken history. The old wooden houses and wharves contribute largely to the charm that makes Myken so special.
