Bjørn took some pictures of a coin that was found behind Karenstua this summer:
"The coin was found on July 17th, it is a silver coin of 8 schilling. It was made in 1730, when Christian the Sixth was King of Denmark-Norway. It might mean that Myken was populated at that time."
Exciting, we still have things to learn about Myken!

Waiting for the daily arrival of the fast-ferry is a summer ritual for many. Some await visitors, some cargo, MS Rødøyløven delivers. It is also a good occasion to chat about the day's happenings and socialize, a trip to the Karentstua café afterwards, perhaps?

Eirik was in Myken for Easter and took this picture, good work Eirik! It is taken at Nordløkta with a view on Hestmannen and De Syv Søstre (The Seven Sisters) in the distance.

Last year we organized an Easter excursion to Dampmaskinen (The Steam Engine; a formation of rocks) with an accompanying picnic (see also last year's April picture). The Weather Gods were in a good mood and Ragnhild was the perfect guide, dishing out tales of Myken's past. Here the group took a breather and enjoyed the view/pond.

Spring showed no signs of coming early this year (as these pictures by Cato and Hafsteinn show). The top one (by Cato) portrays another example of how fantastic lighting can be in Myken (view on Lovund and Dørvær). The bottom picture (by Hafsteinn) contrasts the warmer feel of Cato's on what must have been a rather chilly and windy day.
Exceptionally, we present two pictures this month, just because we were unable to choose between them. Do you wish to present the picture of the month? Send your proposal (alternatively with text) to foto[at]myken.no.

February is the busiest month of the winter fisheries in Lofoten, everyone wants the migrating cod (skrei)! Many boats travel through Myken on their way north, while some stay in the area. Busy times at the wharf! Winter is a good time to visit, either to watch life in the harbour or experience winter at sea.

The dark season is the time for experiencing the aurora borealis (northern light). Fortunately Roar was on the spot in January last year, when this wonderful sight unfolded. We join a link about the northern lights, and activities associated with experiencing it, at visitnorway.com. Of course, we recommend a stay at Myken Fyr (the light house) or Odinplassen (the guest house) to experience this phenomenon in peace and quiet in Myken.

This picture was taken on the 4th day of Christmas 2009, with a view towards Lovund. It was exceptionally cold for Myken (-9 degrees Celcius). Strong gales from the east did not make it feel warmer, so it was good to see the sun, albeit low in the sky.
Thanks to Arild for this excellent contribution! Do you wish to present the picture of the month? Send your proposal (alternatively with text) to foto@myken.no.
Picture of the month: November

The days begin to get short for real in November, but this also gives rise to long and splendid sunsets. No talk of the sun setting in just ten minutes up here! Note how far south the sun goes down in this picture, compared to those of the midnight sun in June.

For October we present a beautiful view towards the island of Lovund. There are many splendid autumn and winter days, like this one, in Myken.

We present a wonderful panoramic shot for the month of September, taken by Elin Barosen some three years ago. We see almost all of "Sjurøya" (the main island), the view one would have if one were to rent the lighthouse a quiet autumn weekend.

This month we present the summer mood from "Myken Beach", aka Færøyvalen. It is great to be here, even though the water temperature seldom rises above 15 degrees celsius. Children play in the sand, between the rocks and the seaweed. It becomes a sport to see who gets into the water, here we have Josefine, Nikolai, and Trygve playing around and having fun with the inflatable canoe.

”Everyone” registered that Trude and Roar brought their family to Myken to spend a year. Here we see the youngest members pictured, and myken.no would like to thank the entire family for a great year (that’s not quite yet over) with many memorable experiences. We wish them all the best and good luck with future projects. We hope (and count on...) seeing them regularly, even though they will not live permanently in Myken after the end of the school year. Thank you again for enriching the lives of those that have a relationship to Myken. (Some of their experiences can be seen on mykenliv.blogspot.com (Norwegian only)).

The people in Myken organized a field trip/barbeque to "Dampmaskinen" ("the steam engine") and "Saustia" ("the sheep path") on the first day of Easter. Both young and old had a great time under the wonderful spring sun, we could hardly have wished for a better start in April! The two guys in front take a well deserved rest after hard labour the days before.

Myken's interest group, Myken Vel, is gathering support for our grocery store by mounting a cooperative. They seek both members to join the cooperative and shopkeepers to take care of the business. Here we see the location from "Nonshaugen" as well as a splendid view over the sound and the light house.

This shot shows how beautiful the darkest period of the year can be. The lighthouse is captured underneath The Big Dipper and the northern light (aurora borealis) puts a greenish atmosphere over it all. Thus, it does not get completely dark in Myken.

December is the darkest time of the year and the houses take on a different air. The snow has not yet stuck on Myken and the ground is still bare; the grass even still looks green, despite the season.

It is November, and in Myken Lauritz has put up sticks along the edges of the road in preparation for the first heavy snowfall and consequent snow clearing. The small boats have been put ashore, and the docks secured for the winter. Still, Myken sees some fine autumn days, like this one.

View over the northern part of the main island "Sjurøya" and the houses, taken from the lighthouse. One can see the docks belonging to the lighthouse in the foreground. The picture was taken last year, and a trained eye will spot that the old grocery store "Gammalbutikken" (just right of center) was still being renovated.

June is the first summer month and the season of the midnight sun; a great time to visit this island community. The regular summer guests start arriving towards the end of the month, with the celebration of midsummer's eve, or the feast of St. John the Baptist, as a highlight.

This year's first "tourist visit" already took place on April 25th - 26th, when the "fembøring" "Vågar" from Lofoten folkehøgskole ("folk high school") in Kabelvåg came to Myken. Thirteen students and teachers were happy to moor in Myken after crossing the larges of Vestfjorden on their trip to Helgeland.
