Weather and Climate

Midnight sun

In Myken, weather will always be an important subject of conversation. Summer can be wonderful for long periods, but, this far north, it can also turn cold, rainy and windy. It’s not a very good idea to go to Myken with the sole intention of sunbathing, but it is possible to do so when conditions are right.

Because Myken is north of the Arctic circle, people can enjoy the midnight sun for a long period in June/July. It is difficult to describe the joy of experiencing evening and dawn at the same time. This is the time of the year when your sleeping patterns are fit around things you want to do. It is not unusual to have visitors call well after midnight, to see if you want to go for a walk or even fishing!

Summer temperatures will normally range from 14 to 26 degrees Celsius. In the autumn and winter season, it is wise to be prepared for bad weather conditions with gales, rain and a storm now and then. However, because Myken is in the path of the warm Gulf Stream, winters here are nowhere as cold as on the mainland. And there are many quiet, clear, black nights where the amazing northern lights give vivid, startling "shows" that never cease to fill one with a sense of awe and wonder. A trip to Myken in winter will surely give you a completely different experience than coming in summer.
